Q & A: Recovery forever?

Q: Do people ever fully recover?

A: Yes, some people do recover completely. They stop obessing about food and weight, they quit buying into the culture’s pressure to be thin, they can look back at their eating disorder like scenery in a rear view mirror. However, this degree of recovery often takes years.

Generally, recovery comes in many shades of grey. Anorexia nervosa, bulimia, and binge eating disorder can be chronic and life threatening. However, most people who actively pursue changing their behaviors and thoughts have some measure of success. For someone who may have binged several times daily for many years, cutting down to a couple of binges in a month is great progress. They should have the expectation of even improving more. Perhaps they will stop bingeing completely but continue to obsess about their weight. That’s a tremendous accomplishment compared to how they started. Eventually, maybe they will become fully recovered. Many others have!
