Q & A: When is it preferable to have a female therapist?
A group of 27 eating disorder therapists (22 women and 5 men) were asked this question. Most agreed that a female therapist might be preferable under the following conditions: when a client specifically asks for a female therapist, requests a feminist approach to treatment (and no other type of therapy), or has a history of sexual abuse by her father (but not her mother), or has specific body image concerns.
