Walk Toward The Light

Walk Toward The Light

I don’t even know how it happened.
The detour was such a gradual one.
I never planned to be on it at all,
let alone for so long.
I never planned to get so lost
in the forest of ED,
but, I did.
After years of wandering aimlessly with him,
I wanted to find my way out.
Then, I saw it;
a pinprick of light
way up ahead.
I decided to risk walking toward it,
to risk trying to get out of ED.
The going was rough,
especially at first.
Many times, I almost gave up,
until I began to realize something –
the pinprick of light
was growing bigger and brighter!
It lit my way out
of this long, hard detour.
Now that I’m out,
I never want to go back.
I love living free!

About this poem, Anne says, “Nobody wakes up one morning and says, ‘I think I’ll get an eating disorder.’ It happens slowly over time until they find themselves stuck in it and out of control. I hope my own experience will help others to follow the light out of ED to freedom.”

The Bench

The Bench

I know the journey is hard.
There’s a bench just up ahead
Under some trees.
Let’s sit down,
Stop for a while.
We don’t have to talk
Unless you want to.
We can listen to the birds sing,
Feel the wind,
Enjoy the view,
And see,
Really see
The life that’s out there for us.
Then,
When we are both ready,
We can continue
Our journey of recovery.
I know it has its bumps
And steep hills,
But it also has its
Easier, smoother valleys and vistas.
The most important thing,
My friend,
Is that we not travel it alone.
It is a journey meant to be taken
Hand in hand.
Take mine.
